Strong education means supporting referenda

From Barb Moser

Monroe

To the editor:

I am Barb Moser, mother of five children who all graduated from Monroe High School, and support both Monroe School District referendums, which are on the ballot in November.

My husband and I have always instilled in our children the importance of education. We taught them to respect the profession of teaching: without an education, a student will have a tough time achieving goals like having a stable job, making a solid living and giving back to their community. I showed our children by example how I felt about the importance of their education. I ran for school board and served for nine years, ultimately serving as vice president of the board.

Monroe schools teach more than reading, writing and arithmetic. We have an excellent special education program and our teachers go above and beyond for these students. Some of these students have told me how much they love school and their teachers, and we help those students get a solid education and move forward in life. We also have an excellent foreign language program where students can learn and travel to see other cultures, broadening their perspective in many ways.

Other classes such as phy ed, art, music and FFA help some students enjoy their school days and although they might not excel in some classes, they will here.

We need to continue in our excellence by supporting the programs we have in our schools and also by making our schools safe, secure and usable by all students, whether able-bodied or not. We also need to attract good teachers to our district and work to keep our good teachers here, because without great staff, our buildings are just buildings.

A key for Monroe is to not lose students to open enrollment, but to provide great programs and facilities to attract students to our District. And we need to ensure that our schools are welcoming, and “bully free” to ALL.

So, lets continue our support for the Monroe School District and move forward by saying YES to both referendum questions on November 6th.
