Stephenson County Republican Central Committee Illinois: Opposing proposed Home Rule Sales Tax increase
Letter To The Editor

From the Stephenson County Republican Central Committee Illinois

To the Editor:

The Stephenson County Republican Central Committee (SCRCC) strongly opposes the 1% Home Rule Sales Tax increase currently being considered by the Freeport City Council.

Andrew Chesney, Chairman of the SCRCC, said that the proposed increase “will propel the City of Freeport and its taxpayers to have the unique and sad distinction of having one of the highest Sales Tax Rates throughout the State of Illinois, putting Freeport at a competitive disadvantage. While Northwest Illinois is struggling with high inflation, high-interest rates, and the high cost of gas, the burden is too great to expect the taxpayers to pay more. Right now, government at all levels should be focused on tax relief, not tax increases.”

The SCRCC recommends that City of Freeport residents contact their Alderperson and voice their opposition to any new taxes or tax increases during these difficult financial times.  A complete list of the City of Freeport Alderpersons can be found at: cityoffreeport.org/person-category/
