From Mike Sanders
Monroe
To the Editor:
I am writing to express my strong support for the upcoming Monroe school referendum on April 7.
In August 2017, my grandson came to live with my wife and me after leaving a challenging home situation. At that time, he was struggling in school and at risk of not graduating from high school. When he enrolled in Monroe schools, we met with school staff to develop a plan to help him get back on track.
What we experienced during that time was remarkable. The educators and administrators we worked with were not only compassionate and supportive, but also honest and firm. They made it clear that while they and we as grandparents would provide support, our grandson needed to take responsibility and put in the work. That balance of encouragement and accountability proved to be life-changing.
Today, our grandson is a successful young man working in creative arts in Los Angeles. His turnaround began in Monroe, thanks in large part to the dedication and leadership of the people in our schools. Notably, the individuals who helped guide us through that difficult time — Joe Monroe and Jeriamy Jackson — are now serving in key leadership roles within the district. Their commitment to students and families is exactly why I have confidence in the future of our schools.
I urge our community to vote yes on April 7. By supporting this referendum, we are investing in the people and programs that give students a real chance to succeed. My grandson’s story is just one example of what’s possible when our schools are strong and supported.
Let’s ensure that other young people in Monroe have the same opportunity.
