To the Editor:
I recently wrote a letter to the Monroe Times as one of Monroe’s Senior taxpayers. Traffic behavior has not improved in this area of Monroe. With the construction of the new high school in the neighborhood and the many utility/street projects around here, something needs to change. I stated before that 8 ½ Street, 29th Avenue, 30th Avenue, 31st Avenue, and 32nd Avenue continue to be racetracks. The 32nd Ave. racetrack has slowed up home with Phase 1 starting. Look out for the 8 ½ Street racetrack just West of 31st Ave. It is just starting. With the start of school, this alarms me.
The traffic congestion on 30th Ave. with the drop off, pick up of students, and the vehicles speeding around here in a school zone on 8 ½ Street will continue. I have not seen any improvements to date or added present of the Monroe Police Department. It will take more than just patrolling this area periodically. Citations will have to be written for traffic violators. It is a time to get a handle on this problem and use unmarked squad vehicles, not marked.
The multiple weekly mowings on the Northside Elementary School grass area still continues. Why?
My solution of a parking lot on school property on the West side of the Northside Elementary School will still help the parking issue during the school year and road construction in this area. The idea of the city installing many 3 or 4 way stop signs that have blinking lights around here is still an option also. The addition of portable or permanent bump strips to the ends of most streets around this area would help immensely as I mentioned previously. Bump strips do work to slow down speeders as well as law enforcement. In conclusion, these options for traffic control are all up for discussion and implementation. I can’t correct this issue on my own.
