Rupp: Traffic Control and Taxes
Letter To The Editor

By Jonathon Rupp

Monroe

To the Editor:

I am one of Monroe’s Senior taxpayers and I’m not elated about the school district’s building of the new high school in my neighborhood. I have many reasons for this. To start with I live on 8 1/2 street, directly across from Northside Elementary School for 30 years. My yearly taxes just keep going up also. Traffic in this area of the city is a racetrack. Now, add another school?

One reason/issue: The traffic congestion on 30th Ave. with the drop off, pick up of students, and the vehicles speeding around here in a school zone. 8 1/2 Street is a race track as it is. These parents need a different zone to park in. Another issue is parents parking here and throwing their cigarette butts, etc. onto my terrace. There are a few people of whom like to park in part of my driveway area. There are 4 mailboxes that they like to park in front of here on the Southside of my driveway. As I mentioned, 32nd and 31st Avenues are both racetracks in addition to 8 1/2 Street with little or no law enforcement. It is a time to get a handle on this problem.

Second reason/issue: Wasted tax dollars mowing the grass during drought times. Mowing the same area of grass 2 days in a row? Why? Snowblowing nothing when there isn’t really anything to clear. Just driving around wasting gas and time also. Wasted taxpayer dollars.

Solutions: Put a parking lot on school property on the westside of the school. The city needs to install many 3 or 4 way stop signs that have blinking lights. Add portable or permanent bump strips to the ends of most streets in this area. People tend to slow down for bump strips. Finally, law enforcement needs to patrol the area more frequently and pick up Stop sign runners and speeders. For the second issue, that is up to the School District also.
