To the Editor:
I am writing in response to the recent headline: “Spoiled Cheese crumble, let perfect RVC record slip away.”
While I understand that sports headlines are meant to grab attention, I feel this one misses the mark. These are high school athletes — students in our community — and we must remain mindful of how our words affect their mental health and overall experience. The term “spoiled” carries a negative connotation that goes beyond describing a football game. These young men are not professionals; they are teenagers working hard, learning life lessons, and representing Monroe with pride.
Since joining the Rock Valley Conference in 2020, the Monroe Cheesemakers accomplished something extraordinary: a 29-0 conference record and four straight titles. That level of consistency deserves recognition. But more importantly, this season is not about living in the shadow of past records. It is about who this team is today — a group of players adjusting, persevering, and competing with heart during a transitional year.
The 2025 season marks both Monroe’s final in the Rock Valley Conference and the last to be played at T.R. Holyoke Field. Rather than diminishing their efforts with harsh language, let’s support our players as they carry on the proud tradition of Monroe football, win or lose.
