Letter to the Editor: Vinehout will keep teachers in the classroom
newspaper

From Roberta Moe

Albany

To the editor:

This letter is for two different issues for our state. First is on the Act 10 policies and the second issue is on the Democratic Forum held at the Monroe Arts Center, July 17, 2018. In parts of Wisconsin, our future teachers would have to take the FORT test (Foundation of Reading Test) and pass it before they could student teach. Students that went to Platteville College and lived in southern Wisconsin had to go to Highland College in Freeport, Illinois, to take this test. Platteville wasn’t allowed to give the test. Every time the test is taken it cost the student $155. Just recently, they can take the test at MATC in Madison at a cost of $139.

This Act 10 and FORT test that Gov. Walker and Senator Fitzgerald pushed through is hindering our college students to become teachers. These future students are changing their college major to anything but teaching. We could be losing great teachers for our schools due to the hassle and the cost of this test. Our rural and urban schools are “screaming” for teachers. This system is “failing” our future generation for a good education.

Second issue is on the Democratic Forum. I feel Kathleen Vinehout will be a good governor because of her experience at the Capitol for the past 12 years.

She has worked with the state’s budget every year.

She already knows where the monies are needed with the state’s functions. Kathleen could immediately start correcting our state’s spending.

Also, she would be taking action to turn our education back to normal conditions and get teachers back into the classrooms.

Final thought: Do we want a governor as a “green horn” or have someone that understands the state funds and spending methods like Kathleen Vinehout does?
