Letter to the Editor: Senators must uphold oath
Letter To The Editor

From La Vern F. Isely

To the editor:

Republican President Donald Trump got himself into big trouble when the Democratic House voted on two articles of impeachment. The evidence the Democratic House presented was that President Trump wanted Ukraine to get dirt on Vice President Biden by withholding military aid by a phone call on July 25, 2019, which Donald Trump called perfect but failing to mention the fact that he was blackmailing Ukraine by withholding almost $400 million in military aid Ukraine needed to buy weapons so they could fight communist Russia, who was trying to occupy Ukraine for the last five years in a costly war in money and lives.

The problem now is that the House has to send the articles of impeachment over to the Senate for the trial. Republican Majority Leader, Senator Mitch McConnell, said he is not going to call any witnesses to testify under oath or allow any documents. It’s creating more and more resentment because 70% of the people think they should have witnesses and evidence presented like they did in the Democratic House of Representatives during the impeachment inquiry.

The media pressure is gradually growing more and more against Senator McConnell stalling to cover up for President Trump’s Ukraine blunder. The pressure is growing because Republican John Bolton said he would testify if asked to do so. He is one of four witnesses that Democratic Minority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer has requested. The other three being Mick Mulvaney, Michael Duffey and Robert Blair.

The question is — how long is Democratic Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, going to wait? Because she doesn’t want the Senate trial to be a cover-up and a one-sided affair by embarrassing our U.S. Constitution because every Senator has to take a special oath to uphold the Constitution, tell the truth, and be impartial, which the voters must expect from their elected legislators.

If Donald Trump gets away with this cover-up with no witnesses or documents presented before the trial because he said he wants it done like the way Democrat President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial, ignoring the fact that President Clinton did testify under oath for hours which, up to now, President Trump has ignored all requests making the Republican-controlled Senate look ridiculous. Even if they were to acquit the President, it would hurt their reelection chances in the November 2020 election.
