Mixdorf: More to the Medicare story
Letter To The Editor

From Frank Mixdorf

New Glarus

To the Editor:

Last Saturday’s edition of The Monroe Times featured a letter to the editor thanking Trump for a cap on insulin prices and criticizing President Biden and Senator Baldwin for taking credit, even accusing them of lying. Well, as usual there’s more to the story when Trump is involved. To expand on the Editor’s note in case it was overlooked, it’s true that very late in Trump’s single term, just before the election, a law was passed to cap insulin prices for those on Medicare. However, it was voluntary for medical providers and had limitations on the type of insulin products, meaning only about one out of four insulin users on Medicare were actually able to benefit, not the millions recently claimed by Trump on social media. By contrast, as part of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022 under President Biden the $35 cap on insulin became available to all users on Medicare regardless of who they receive the insulin from or in what form. It should also be noted that Republicans are doing everything possible to prevent this benefit from being extended to those Americans not eligible for Medicare.
