Landuyt: Celebrating the U.S. Army Founding
Letter To The Editor

From Lee D. Van Landuyt

Hillsboro

To the Editor:

The U.S. Army was established on June 14, 1775 when the Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia to pass a resolution assigning six companies of expert riflemen from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia to join the New England Army of Observation who were united to fight British troops occupying Boston and much of Massachusetts. With the remainder of colonies also joining this effort, the Continental Army was officially established.

On June 15, 1775, the Continental Congress selected George Washington as the first Commander-in-Chief. They believed him to be the best person to unite and lead this continental army because of his reputation and proven leadership skills.

This Saturday, June 14, 2025, the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States Army will be celebrated. We remember all those who served in uniform across two-and-a-half centuries, especially those who gave their lives for love of this nation.

This day celebrates our dedication to the Constitution. It is not meant to celebrate a draft-dodger’s birthday. One who mocks POWS and those killed in the line of duty, calling them “suckers and losers.” As a veteran, I abhor those who disrespect our true heroes. Remember Senator John McCain’s heroic selfless sacrifices.
