To the Editor:
If one would Google “moral majority, the start of the anti-abortion controversy,” one will see that the controversy wasn’t started by humble men of God. No, they were seeking to turn the Dixiecrats into Republicans by telling them they’re good Christians because they’re “saving babies”. It worked then and it’s still working now. Never mind there wasn’t Bible study involved.
If God shared the anti-abortion intensity of modern Christians, it would be mentioned several times throughout the Bible in specific terms. It’s not. But free will? Consider all of the Old Testament stories. One great consistency in them is that God accepts and reacts to His children free will and they go on from there. He doesn’t force their free will. For why would He give humanity the divine gift of free will only to snatch it away in His dealings with them? It is Satan and despots who force free wills, while God says, “Let us reason together”. Isaiah 1:18, first part. And, “ not by might nor by power, but by my spirit, saith The Lord.” Zechariah 4:6, last part. Forcefully removing your sister’s free will is an affront to this text. Perhaps the anti-abortionists can show their faith in God by giving the babies to Jesus’s care, the only One who can truly save them. Jesus came to save the adults, those with reasoning to understand His words and appreciate His character and the free will to follow Him. It is far easier to say one is “saving babies” than to humble ones’ heart and will before God, seeking the character of the Savior so that adults are drawn to the love of God through ones’ Christ-like compassion. “I have loved thee with an everlasting love; therefore by loving kindness have I drawn thee.” Jeremiah 31:3, italics supplied.
The anti-abortionists say “no possible abortions,” implying they know what’s best for every woman in every situation. But only God can take every situation on a case by case basis with perfect love and judgement. Anti-abortionists insist that every pregnancy is God’s will, thus implying that they know the thoughts of God. But He states, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith The Lord.” Isiah 55:8.
The anti-abortion Christians’ gall and hubris is only exceeded by the danger to the soul of whomever assumes powers that only God possesses.
