To the Editor:
From clean air to our government — corporations and the ultra-wealthy have been exploiting and destroying much of what we need to thrive as humans and communities. The frameworks and protections have been plucked away, attacked, and dismantled.
While good people looking to serve, advance science, and help others remain in the public sector, the boa constrictor squeeze from these profit-driven corporate powers-that-be have rendered them nearly powerless.
Agencies like the WI Public Service Commission (PSC) and WI Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are no longer living up to their mission and purpose — protecting the people (and environment) of Wisconsin. No longer does an air permit from the DNR mean your air will be safe to breathe.
Funding cuts, personnel cuts, and infiltration by the private sector have resulted in the fast-tracking of corporate wishes for their advancement and profit. We have seen that play out at home and on the National Stage.
The greater Beloit area (Township to South Beloit) was found to have the most polluted air for a smaller city in the USA in 2023. Legal toxic chemical releases reported to the EPA are 95-100% in the country, yet our monopoly utility is trying to build out another gas plant. Insult to injury and padding their profit margin.
The threads of our patchwork protections continued to be ripped apart in DC — including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Will our most basic rights be sacrificed to the insatiable hoarding of corporate wealth?
