Fowdy: Say ‘Yes’ to Monroe schools
Letter To The Editor

From Karen Fowdy

Monroe

To the Editor:

I am writing to encourage the voters in our community to say “Yes” on November 8 in support of the Monroe School District referendum.  As a former Monroe High School teacher and a parent of three children who graduated from MHS, I have many reasons to be grateful for the dedication to excellence in education Monroe.  A primary factor in our decision to move our young family to Monroe more than 30 years ago was the excellent school system. Unfortunately, a tour of our current high school reveals foundation issues, mold, deteriorating plumbing, outdated mechanical systems and classrooms, and restrooms and locker rooms that are not ADA accessible, among many other problems. The current facility would not inspire confidence in that same school system today.

While the teachers, administrators, and custodial staff do their best to make the high school environment as effective and attractive as possible, there is no work-around or cosmetic fix for these serious issues.

The process that has led to this referendum vote has been focused, informed, and transparent. Some of the questions and concerns I have heard regarding the referendum can be readily addressed by viewing the extensive information provided at the Monroe School District website.

The recent Cheese Days celebrations reflected our pride in the traditions and contributions of those who made Monroe the town we call “home.” We can honor that vision of a thriving community by investing in our future. Our students deserve to feel safe at school and valued in our community. Your vote matters! Please join me in voting “YES” to the Monroe School District referendum.
