Donovan: Thanksgiving
Letter To The Editor

From Paul Donovan

Monroe

To the Editor:

“One should not forget the struggles, sacrifices and perseverance of past generations.”

Thanksgiving is almost here and at the dinner table surrounded by family and friends it is not uncommon for each person to take turns saying what they are thankful for.

In this time in history of entitlement and ungrateful attitudes a thankful person can be difficult to come by, even worse is that history in our country and the world is being forgotten at a frighteningly rapid pace.

Acknowledging what we are thankful for in life is important, yet this Thanksgiving I challenge all readers to take what they are thankful for one step further.

We’ve all heard the story of the pilgrims and their Mayflower voyage that led to the first Thanksgiving. What is not acknowledged enough is like so many figures in history is that we should say we are thankful for what they have done.

Whether it is Christopher Columbus, The Pilgrims, George Washington, the veterans and even our own grandparents we should all take time this Thanksgiving to pay tribute for what they did that paved the way for where and who we are today.

In this time of cancel culture, we have forgotten that no one is perfect and some of the greatest risk takers in history may not have been perfect in their decisions, but it is their bravery and actions that paved the way forward.

Whether we agree with all their actions or not if you are grateful for where you live and who you are this Thanksgiving. Then Thank God for his son and the people of the past in both your family and those who planted the seeds to our nation.

Let us all be Thankful for the risks taken, sweat shed and lives sacrificed that planted the seeds of generations leading to who we are today.
