To the Editor:
October is a month known for the changing weather, fall colors and of course the spooky holiday of Halloween.
Yet in the Catholic Church October is recognized as Respect Life Month.
I have a scary challenge for all the readers imagine a world without children.
That is becoming a reality throughout the world most notably in Japan and South Korea where the birth rates have collapsed and over a quarter of the population is over the age of 65 with no increase in births in sight.
In this month I’m bringing this up because it is not only important to fight for the unborn but to champion the creation of life and family.
Today the family structure has collapsed, and movements including feminism and DINK lifestyle continues to champion lack of families and the abandonment of having children.
Right now, society is making decisions for here and now but not thinking of long-term consequences that will only be seen decades from now.
It is easy to think of how much money one can have or the free ride life will be without the cost or responsibility of children.
Yet the scary consequences need to be greatly considered.
What will old age be like with no family to help care for those who choose not to have children or how lonely old age may be with no children or family to visit them.
The economic factors may be even more horrific with fewer people paying into social security and less people in the workforce limiting the healthcare industry of who will get care and who will support the businesses/essential services to keep society afloat?
This October we need to expand our idea of what pro-life means to defend the unborn and champion the creation of life to preserve society as we know it.
