Cook: Strongly supporting school referendum
Letter To The Editor

From Clare Cook

Monroe

To the Editor:

I am writing to express my strong support for the Monroe School District’s operating referendum to invest $2.75 million in our community’s schools for each of the next four years. I was born and raised in Monroe, graduated from Monroe High School in 2000, and my husband and I chose to move back seventeen years ago to raise our family here. It is a place we have always been proud to call home.

My parents were both teachers in the Monroe Schools for over thirty years, and seeing their dedication to their students’ growth and success contributed to my own decision to choose a career in education. Many of my core values developed from courses and activities I participated in within Monroe Schools and from teachers who consistently challenged and encouraged me. We also have two sons attending Monroe High School who participate in AP classes, trade electives, and the Launch program, activities that stretch them, help them plan for their future, and engage them in the broader community. If this referendum does not pass, these types of programs could be reduced or eliminated.

We are one of many districts in our state facing an operational referendum due to state funding shortfalls. Every other school district in Green County has already approved an operational referendum to provide additional funding for their schools’ daily operations. Monroe Schools have made many difficult cuts to address state budget shortfalls over recent years, and this referendum would provide the stability and momentum needed for continued growth in our schools, protecting student access to high quality programming, educators and staff, and special education services.

Our district is currently among the fastest-improving districts in the state, a testament to the hard work and dedication of educators and staff working with our students. I believe that by supporting these educators and students, we can support the entire community. Strong schools prepare the next generation for the workforce and civic engagement, attract new families, and support local businesses. They support the young people who will become the future trades workers, business owners, healthcare workers, and leaders who choose to come back to Monroe to raise their families here, who are proud to call Monroe home.
