Monroe

To the Editor:

I would like to invite our community to attend one of the four remaining listening sessions to learn more about the April 7, 2026 referendum for the School District of Monroe. These sessions are a great opportunity to hear accurate information, ask questions, and better understand the district’s plans and needs.

The remaining sessions will be held:

Monday, March 9 at the Behring Senior Center from 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Tuesday, March 10 at the Chamber Fireside Chat at the YMCA of Green County from 7:30-8:30 a.m.

Tuesday, March 17 during MHS Legacy Night at the Monroe High School LMC from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Thursday, March 26 at the New Monroe High School Preview Event & Presentation from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Superintendent Joe Monroe will be present to explain Wisconsin’s public school funding challenges, what the district has already done to reduce costs, what may be cut if the referendum does not pass, and what the potential impact could be on staffing, programs, and property taxes.

Having lived in Monroe for 48 years, I have seen firsthand how deeply our schools are woven into the fabric of our community. The dedicated staff teach, inspire, and guide students with patience and heart. Their hard work, alongside supportive families and motivated students, has resulted in a four-star district report card, with all three elementary schools earning five-star ratings.

I am especially proud of how the district partners with local businesses and organizations. High school programs such as LAUNCH, SOAR, youth apprenticeships, and the home construction collaboration provide students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. The community’s generosity — raising $3 million in sponsorships for the new high school and contributing over $21,000 to the Backpack Buddies program — shows how much Monroe values its schools.

Beyond academics, the district invests in extracurricular and after-school opportunities that help students discover their passions — whether in athletics, arts, leadership, service clubs, or academic teams. These experiences build confidence, connection, and community.

Thank you to the Monroe School District for being one of the reasons I love Monroe. I encourage everyone to attend a listening session, get informed, and join me in voting YES on April 7, 2026.
