To the editor:

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, the Green County Board will vote on whether to enact a 9-month moratorium on the establishment of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) in Green County. The measure unanimously passed in the board's Land and Water Conservation Committee and has wide support among Green County residents. As of Tuesday, The Monroe Times' online reader poll showed 84 percent in favor of the moratorium.

Now it's time for the Green County Board to act. Nearly every day one hears of another manure spill, another fouled stream or another tainted well. In the Kewaunee County's Town of Algoma, kids have to carry jugs of water home from school because their homes' wells are contaminated. If we're going to prevent that sort of thing from happening here, our elected officials need to ensure, through the moratorium, that we have time to study the problem. In a few short months we will have the results of the hydrogeologic study, which is already underway, to help us choose our path forward.

Do your part. Please call your county supervisor. Their contact info is on the county website, (www.co.green.wi.gov) and say that you favor the moratorium. Please also attend the board meeting at the Green County Courthouse on Aug. 8th. I hope to see you there.
