The American Legislative Exchange Council or ALEC is pretty much running our lives here in Wisconsin. Members are state legislators and corporations. It is considered the most formidable right-wing policy-making machine in Wisconsin and the United States.
What they do is put their heads together and write legislation that pleases the corporate members. The corporate members push the legislation that will boost corporation profits, privatize public schools and drive down wages.
Scott Walker was a member of ALEC in the 1990s and was their golden boy. His record shows that he reduced state aid by more than a billion dollars to public K-12 schools and promoted voucher schools. He killed the union for public employees. He signed the right-to-work law. Corporate members wanted legislation that would drive down worker's wages. Our Monroe teacher's went for five years without a raise in wages.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, is a member of ALEC. He is their former Wisconsin state chair. He boldly introduced legislation to dismantle the open records law. Watch him. He might try again.
It is extremely important to vote for Democratic candidates to the assembly and the senate. The Republicans gerrymandered our state so now every Democratic vote is important. Also it is extremely important to vote for Democratic Russ Feingold for the U.S. Senate. We need to get out of this Republican nightmare.
So many times I asked myself why are the Republicans and Ron Johnson doing this? We send them off to serve us and look what we got in return.
Why do they do this? So they can schmooze with the wealthy and get power, raw, unabridged power in return.
