To the editor:
I would like to briefly respond to a report in The Monroe Times concerning the Southern Poverty Law Center's (SPLC) designation of Pilgrims Covenant Church as a "hate group."
The SPLC was founded by Morris Dees, a lawyer specializing in litigation. The group has prospered by labeling as hate mongers conservative politicians and radio talk show hosts, as well as pro-family leaders and groups, also Christian pastors and their churches which faithfully hold to "all the counsel of God" (Acts 20:26-27).
As for such pastors and their churches, the SPLC stock in trade is to comb through the teaching and ministry history of the church in order to find something, anything, to take out of context, misrepresent, or even misquote in order to label the faithful church a "hate group" and throw it in with such truly despicable organizations as the Ku Klux Klan, the American Nazi Party, and Westboro Baptist Church. This is exactly what the SPLC has done with Pilgrims Covenant Church.
At the same time, the Southern Poverty Law Center ignores the inconvenient facts concerning the faithful churches' consistent teachings, including the central message of all faithful churches: Namely, that forgiveness and cleansing of sin and new, eternal life is offered to all men, women, and young people through "repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ" (Acts 20:21). Those wishing to have an accurate picture of Pilgrims Covenant Church need only to listen to a few of our sermons at sermonaudio.com/pcc or visit our web site at pccmonroe.org.
