BBBS Executive Director, Monroe

To the editor:

My name is Shannon Kaszuba and I am the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Green County. I'm writing today because the United Way is currently conducting its annual campaign, working to raise money to support valuable programs in Green County communities. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Green County is just one of over 40 local programs supported by the United Way. When you give to the United Way some very important things happen in our community. I'd like to tell you about just a few of them.

United Way funding is very important to the success of our programs each year.  Thanks largely to their support we can offer three different program opportunities to youth and adults which match a caring volunteer (Big Brother, Sister or couple) with a child ("little") for a one-to-one mentoring relationship experience that will hopefully change that child's life for the better, forever. When a child is successfully matched to a caring mentor and especially over multiple years together, the overall outcomes of these relationships is truly amazing and inspirational to witness. Many of our matches remain in contact with one another well beyond their official closure dates and we often have youth who were once littles in our programs return when they are older and become Big Brothers and Sisters as a way to "pay forward" the experience to another child. Last year we were able to serve 249 youth in the communities of Brodhead, Juda, Monticello, New Glarus, Albany and Monroe between our Community based, School Friends and Lunch Buddies mentoring programs.

The United Way is, in fact, one of the leading local funders of our agency. Without the funding Big Brother Big Sisters receives from United Way of Green County, our agency would not have the capability to serve the number of youth and families we do every year. We also would not have the ability to explore and create new opportunities for the children we serve, so we are very grateful to receive our United Way allocation funding each year we have applied.

United Way of Green County not only financially supports vital programs providing help in our community every day but they also participate in and help to organize collaborative efforts working to identify and meet the needs in our community. The money you contribute to the United Way of Green County really does stay here, in our community, to help people all around us every day. Please consider making a contribution, either annually or monthly, to the United Way of Green County in support of the local non-profit agencies they continue to lend a financial hand to each year. Make a difference in Green County and your communities by giving generously through the current United Way campaign.
