Letter to the editor: The battle for health care

The two political parties - Democrats and Republicans - are really at war. The biggest issue is who is going to give the public a good healthcare bill that's supposed to cover all people. We had Democrat Barack Obama in office for eight years and he created a healthcare bill that covered most all the people along with Medicare and Medicaid - in fact, down to 11 percent uninsured. This was a lot better than what the Republicans had under George W. Bush when a lot of people in their 40s and 50s couldn't get insurance because of pre-existing conditions.

If the Republicans get their way, you are going to put another 23 million people back in the uninsured category, according to the CBO (Congressional Budget Office.) You are hearing all about this in testimonies given at the GOP meetings, if you can get the politicians to show up and have Town Hall meetings in their districts.

Republican President Donald Trump, when he ran for president, said how easy this would be to pass his new healthcare bill known as Trumpcare. He said he was going to have it ready on the same day he was going to repeal Obamacare so no one would lose coverage and also have a lower cost. Trump's meeting a terrible, terrible resistance because they are making comparisons and some Republicans are even realizing some people won't have coverage. Since the Republicans have tried to push this through as fast as they can, with virtually no public hearings or amendments from the Democrats, it just isn't going to happen because of the voters who will remind the politicians in 2018 what they want.

The DNC and RNC got new leaders. Tom Perez (Democrat) and Ronna McDonald (Republican) had a debate with Chuck Todd of NBC's "Meet the Press." Both said we must have healthcare for all the people but they disagreed on the method. DNC Chair Perez said Trumpcare just made Obamacare worse and he quoted the CBO numbers.

Trump said if we can't come to an agreement - just repeal Obamacare entirely. This will instantly leave millions without coverage rather than at a slower rate of loss of coverage which would create a civil war and some Republicans are declining to repeal Obamacare.
