Green County Sexual Assault Recovery Program

To the editor:

The third annual Dancing and Romancing event to benefit the Sexual Assault Recovery Program's Art Therapy services was held on April 13 at the Peppercorn Banquet Hall in Monroe. This annual event promotes healthy relationships and this year's dance featured music from Swingin' Company B and dance lessons led by Jumptown Madison Swing. Our MC, Rev. Peder Johanson from Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brodhead, kept the evening flowing smoothly with breaks for speakers, prizes, and trivia entertainment. Whether trying out some new dance steps, enjoying the delicious hors d'oeuvres and desserts served by Peppercorn Banquets, or relaxing to the music, the evening was enjoyed by all.

We want to thank all the businesses and individuals who generously gave, so that the vital Art Therapy service can continue to be offered free of charge to victims of sexual violence. Enough money was raised through this event to generate 125 hours of art therapy.

Did you know that people who experience sexual violence are at risk of re-victimization and are more likely to suffer from long term chronic health conditions? It is not a trauma that is easily forgotten and can impact a person's life in many ways. Through the Dancing and Romancing event, businesses and individuals showed their support for victims of sexual assault. Collectively through events such as this, we demonstrate that sexual violence is not to be tolerated in our communities.

In Green County, the prevalence of sexual violence is consistent with the national averages and we can expect one in four girls and one in six boys to be sexually assaulted before they reach 18 years. The Dancing and Romancing event helps us to raise awareness and promote an environment that encourages victims to come forward and seek the help they need without fear of being blamed or judged for their own victimization.

Thank you to the generous businesses and individuals who provided silent auction items.

Special thanks to our generous sponsors: Monroe Clinic, Colony Brands, Pinnow Pharmacy, New Glarus Brewing, Rich Cowan, Dr. Lester Nider Family and Big Radio.
