Monroe

To the editor:

After many months of discussion and negotiations between the city of Monroe and the Green County Solid Waste Board, a decision will be made about the future of the solid waste transfer station. This is a non-profit service provided by the Green County Solid Waste Board.

I am writing this to ask you if you are concerned about the future of this service. If you are, you should contact your alderperson and the mayor about your concerns. I don't think you want this valuable service to disappear like Clean Up Days.

If you take tires to the city garage on tire day, it's $3 per tire. If a commercial hauler picks them up, it would be $15. If Freon-equipped appliances are delivered to the transfer station, it would be $25. If a commercial hauler picks them up at your house, it would be $45. If you contract bulk pickup, it would be $186 per ton by a commercial hauler or $45 per ton if you take it to the transfer station. The transfer station takes batteries for free. A commercial hauler takes batters for $10. A commercial hauler charges $30 for non-Freon appliances (stoves, washers and dryers, water heaters). The transfer station charges $10 minimum for up to 440 pounds. After that it is $45 per ton.

If you are like me, you do not want to lose this valuable service. If may not pay for itself, but I can give you a big list of valuable services that do not pay for themselves, ie snow plowing, street repair, street sweeping, Pleasant View Nursing Home.

Thank you for listening and reading this letter.
