To the editor:
To my neighbors who also call Monroe home, please join me in supporting the Monroe School District referendum with a vote of yes on Nov. 8.
Our family moved to Monroe nine years ago. We chose Monroe for several reasons, primarily, the quality and commitment of the community to public education. We were impressed with choice of elementary schools and the quality of the teachers.
We have been proud to call Monroe home and are honored to have our children educated by dedicated staff, volunteers and administration. We have many family and community memories that were created by our committed schools. Northside is where our daughters learned to read. The transition to middle school is where they learned to navigate using iPads for the first time. High school has opened doors of opportunity with various sports activities, arts programming and a challenging academic environment.
Sure, we have had our shares of frustrations with the schools as well. However, we understand that no system is perfect. Time and again when we have asked a teacher or administrator to listen, they have opened their doors, sat down and talked with us. It's not perfect, but this school system belongs to all of us in our community. With that, comes the obligation to make sure it continues to grow, thrive and stay healthy.
At the very same time that state funding is shrinking and expenses continue to rise, our schools are faced with the constant demands of a competitive education program, one that prepares our children for an ever changing global marketplace. Part of creating a healthy economic environment in our community is to attract young professionals and families to and back to Monroe. A strong academically and socially healthy school system is a driving factor for many families.
Each day we in the community are also faced with financial choices. We know that it isn't easy to face another expense for growing and retired families. Please consider the overall expense as it relates to what we gain as a community. Again, it isn't perfect but it is ours. Can we come together to support our children and grandchildren? Our family believes we can, based on nine years of wonderful memories in community rich with heritage, culture and commitment to its future. Please vote yes.
