Monroe

To the editor:

My wife, Linda, and I have been residents of Monroe for the past two-and-a-half decades. During this time I have cherished my years caring for thousands of you as a family practice doctor with the Monroe Clinic. Linda and I have been blessed to raise our family - Charlie, Tony, and Miranda - here and see them thrive through the Monroe public schools.

I'm writing today on behalf of Dick Cates who is running to serve as our next State Representative in the 51st Assembly.

Dick Cates is my oldest brother. We grew up in a loving home with two other brothers, a sister and wonderful, caring parents. Our father served as an officer in the Marine Corp in WWII and the Korean War. He served in the State Assembly and was one of the fairest, most honorable trial lawyers in the state of Wisconsin. He taught our family to cherish our representative democratic tradition. He taught us how to work hard and how to fight for what we believe in. And our mother taught us kinship and empathy with all human beings.

My brother Dick carries on these values. He is thoughtful, kind and intelligent. He received a Ph.D. in Soils from the University of Wisconsin. He farms at the home farm in the Town of Wyoming near Spring Green. And at the University of Wisconsin-Madison he trains and prepares new farmers, through business planning, to run a successful farming business. He is a true steward of the land, and he teaches his students to be the same.

Dick has never been a politician. He has served on his local school board for nine years, as well as many other boards and committees. He is great at getting people together who have diverse interests; by listening and engaging in civil, respectful dialogue, he always has been able to help find common ground. His unique skill set is what we need in Madison to represent our district and southern Wisconsin. I am very proud to endorse Dick Cates for the 51st assembly. Please vote on Nov. 4.
