To the editor:

Thousands of activists from around the country gathered in Washington D.C. in mid-April for a "Democracy Awakening" to get big money out of politics. Signs read "Overturn Citizens United," the Supreme Court ruling that allowed corporations to give huge amounts of money to politicians and political parties. Well-respected Monroe attorney Charles Wellington said that the Citizen's United decision has opened Pandoras box when it comes to money in politics.

The heroes in "Democracy Awakening" also gathered to protect voting rights. "We are not free until we get our democracy back," said organizer Kai Newkirk. Some protesters were arrested but they said they were putting themselves on the line for people across America.

Now that we have an awakening going on, we must support them. One protester said that this is the start of something big ... We have to fix a broken political process. Both Sanders and Clinton know this. Both of them have boldly decried voter suppression such as what happened in Arizona where voters waited as long as five hours to cast primary ballots.

Now we need Sanders and Clinton to talk up the basic premise of the protests. Protesters are willing to commit acts of civil disobedience, so let's get out our pens and write Letters to the Editor supporting "Democracy Awakening." The protest did not receive much media attention, so write the media and let them know that "Democracy Awakening" is us - we the people and we buy many consumer products that are advertised in the media. If they don't help, we won't buy.

We want the end of gerrymandering which has so corrupted our politics in Wisconsin.

We need more people to run for office in the political system. The Republicans know how to do it in Wisconsin. They groom people, starting them off as perhaps an alderman, then on to the county board and then the state legislature.

Call your newspaper and your television stations and tell them you want more stories on "Democracy Awakening." Please do your part and call or write. If you have a few extra bucks, please give it to the Democrats. It's time to get out from under this corruption in our state and all across the nation. Clinton and Sanders are both saying the right thing and people are protesting to get our democracy back. Now is the moment for us to act.
