The United States Postal Service has begun mailing surveys to residents of many rural communities asking for input regarding maintaining or closing rural post office stations. Now is the time to support our post offices by completing the survey and urging the USPS to maintain them.
Anyone living outside the "city" knows the importance of having access to postal services close to our homes including sending or receiving priority mail, obtaining packaging materials and the ability to mail packages, in addition to many other services. Also many people need a post office mailbox in order to receive mail. And the lack of postal services could make the difference for any new business that might consider locating to a rural community.
Services at our community post offices are easily accessible. Anyone who has ever tried to find a place to park at the Monroe Post Office knows how little parking (much less handicapped accessible parking) is available.
Our postmasters and rural mail carriers are the eyes and ears for our citizens, particularly the ill and elderly. They know when something doesn't look right and do whatever they can to make sure people are safe. Increasing loads and decreasing services could affect their ability to be constantly vigilant.
Show your appreciation and support for our community post offices. Complete and mail your survey today. Tomorrow may be too late.
