To the editor:

Once again I find myself responding to a letter that was written in this paper. Extreme views in politics is not good either way. I cannot deny my dislike for how things are going. We must be more sustainable in the future, but not eliminate the dairy industry. While fossil fuels come with many disadvantages, the world today would not be what it is without them. I am not against renewable energy, but it needs to be efficient.

Many young people need to be more involved in agriculture, not driven away like some want you to believe. Raising cows has been a part of life in this community for a long time. While it may have been hard work, it taught many a good work ethic. Something that is lacking in society today. Don't you understand how many businesses in this area rely on dairy industry to survive? Looking at the paper, you can see how important agriculture is in the community. Discriminating animal agriculture is not the way to go about your beliefs.

I do believe where and how your food is raised matters. However, to consider all farms like factory farms is wrong. Just because I am against a large mega farm start up in Green County, does not mean I am against agriculture. When you get too big for your own good that is not good either. These type of farms cause many to think this is how all farms are. This is not the case. Rural development has put many people who know little about agriculture right next to them all the time.

Cows are not just used for meat or dairy, but also products you use or wear like buttons, glues, fertilizer, surgical sutures, medicine, firecrackers, soaps, chewing gum, shaving cream, tennis racquet strings, dyes, inks, insulation, shoes, coating on film, fire protection foam, paint brushes, Insulin and much more.

How far does your fruit and coffee have to travel to get here? As you can see, it is hard to completely avoid animal agriculture, even if you want to. I will continue to eat a mix of meat, vegetables and fruit and support the dairy industry.
