To the editor:

The state vanpool provides alternate transportation for state and non-state employees commuting to Madison from outside communities. Riders enjoy low rates, comfortable vans, and the benefit of convenient pick-up and drop-off locations. Van 1149 will work with each individual to arrange the best possible route to and from work, and try to get riders as close to "door-to-door" as possible to their work location within the route. We also allow for some flexibility. As the healthy lifestyle movement gets bigger, if you would like to get in a little extra walk, we will accommodate you.

Earlier in 2013, I submitted an article regarding Van 1149 that starts in Monroe with pick-up locations in Monticello, New Glarus and Belleville. With route and time changes, I am glad to say that the van has continued and rates have reduced as the number of riders increased. It is really nice to commute to work for half or less than regular driving. If you sat down and figured the cost of driving your own vehicle to and from work five days a week, can you do it for a cost of less than $101 month (based on 13 riders)?

One of the biggest concerns that people have about riding is: "What if I don't like it or it just doesn't work out for me?" We can offer a short trial period to see if you would like it or if it will work for you.

The next biggest concern is: "What about that unexpected emergency?" There is a voucher program that allows for an emergency ride home (three per year).

For more information on Van 1149, please contact me, Amy Jones, at 608-280-7247. If you live or work in an area other than van 1149's route, visit the State Department of Administration website at www.doa.state.wi.us or call 1800-884-VANS. Some areas have more than one van, so make sure you contact the coordinator for each van in that area, if you are told the first one you contact is full. Get on board with the state vanpool program where you can get a comfortable ride to and from work while you read, visit with others or just relax.
