Letter to the editor: Public schools are under attack

To the editor:

Our public schools are under attack in Wisconsin and our resources will be going to religious schools that are unaccountable and don't do better than public schools. I am a believer in separation of church and state and believe public money is for public schools, period. The state already isn't adequately funding the public school system, and this current so-called budget has very important policy changes such as taking off of the top of the education budget to fund religious schools first and give them the most dollars per student with little oversight and accountability.

Now I read that 55 percent of the public schools in Wisconsin will receive less aid in the 2015-17 budget. As an example, Verona will lose $3.1 million, and I would ask how much will your school lose that will go to an unaccountable religious school? Oh, I forgot that you can hire cheaper teachers in the future who can't get certified now. Is that what you want for your children and grandchildren? Then I'm sure there will be lots of jobs for uneducated and unqualified workers in the future.

What can you do? You can call Republican Sen. Howard Marklein who advocates for private schools and now is one of 12 senators who voted to keep us from seeing public records. You could also ask him why he thinks what goes on in government is none of our damn business.
