On Tuesday, April 5, Wisconsin voters will elect a Supreme Court Justice. Court of Appeals Judge Joanne Kloppenburg is the best candidate for the job.
Since being elected to the Court of Appeals, Judge Kloppenburg has decided hundreds of cases. Her written opinions are clear and precise, displaying the disciplined thinking the Supreme Court requires, and demonstrating she is well qualified for this demanding responsibility.
A recent television ad criticizes Judge Kloppenburg's decision in a single case, and suggests the Supreme Court should never rule in favor of a criminal defendant. The exact opposite is true: The Supreme Court must fearlessly apply the law to the case at hand, and not submit to pressure. The vast majority of criminal appeals Judge Kloppenburg has decided affirm the outcome in the trial court. However, she clearly is not afraid to hold prosecutors, law enforcement officers and trial court judges accountable to follow the Constitution they have sworn to uphold.
Judge Kloppenburg has said that court should be a place where, win or lose, everybody believes they were treated fairly, where the judge approaches every case with an open mind, and where the outcome is not a foregone conclusion. Her record at the Court of Appeals proves that these are not mere words to her, but a high standard she lives up to.
She has earned my trust, and my vote for Supreme Court Justice.
