In response to Janice Berding's Letter to the Editor of Nov. 10, calling on the churches to help the homeless, I want her to know that the churches have responded for several years now. The homeless are being helped by 13 host churches in Green County and a host site from the Monroe Clinic. Host sites are open at night so the homeless can sleep there. The rectory at Grace Lutheran Church in Monroe is where the homeless can go in the day time. It gives them an address and phone number that they can give a prospective employer.
The 13 churches and Monroe Clinic site also provides a place where children of the homeless are given a healthy breakfast to start their day. The children are then bussed to school. This entire program is called Family Promise. There currently are 30 churches involved in Family Promise. There are still homeless in Green County. Family Promise saw this year as their biggest year yet. Family Promise is definitely needed and the churches and the Monroe Clinic have responded magnificently.
Ms. Berding also writes that Gov. Walker will "better" our state. I have been waiting four and one half years for him to better our sate and it looks like it will not get any better. Soon he will be given two bills that will lead to more secrecy in government. They are the changes in the Government Accountability Board and a rewrite of Wisconsin's campaign finance laws.
Our governor who has done nothing to help the people of Wisconsin and the Senators and legislators have done nothing helpful are getting terrific benefits paid by us from our taxes. Our taxes give Gov. Walker the best health care insurance, generous retirement benefits, he can live in a mansion at tax payer's expense, he receives a generous salary and can leave our state with full pay for several months while trying to be the Republican candidate for president. Our taxes are also going to provide the state legislators and the state senators with good salaries, the best health care and excellent retirement benefits - all paid for by the tax payers of our state. Do you think we are getting our money's worth?
