Letter to the editor: Dems need stronger candidates

To the editor:

Between Trump's Russia-gate, the horrendous Republican notions of "fixing" Obamacare, Gov. Walker's obsession with more tax breaks for the rich, non-funding of road repair and Republican continued dismantling of public schools, etc., etc., there's a lot of evidence showing what a bunch of lying, hypocritical bums we have running the state and country now. Whether you were a long-time Republican and/or political newbie who voted for Trump hoping for a swamp-clearing, you really should be ashamed for voting for anyone running under the banner of the Republican Party last year. You knew Trump was a misogynistic, pathological liar, but you didn't care. You knew Republicans wanted to give more tax breaks to their wealthy campaign donors and defund public schools, but you didn't care. You knew Republicans wanted to dismantle what few healthcare benefits you already have, but you didn't care. Why?

I'm guessing that you didn't realize what the Democrats have already done for your benefit, and that you didn't realize how much better off you would be if the Democrats would be able to really accomplish what they want to accomplish. Why?

Maybe because the Democrats ran a candidate at the top of the ticket who the Republicans have worked for over a quarter of a century to demonize, and who didn't put forth the differences between the Democratic and Republican agenda in a convincing way. Why?

Maybe the Democratic leadership was so excited about getting their first female presidential candidate they failed to see how damaged she was in the eyes of the rest of the electorate, and how uninspiring she was as a speaker. They missed the chance to nominate a real, honest, intelligent populist candidate in Sen. Bernie Sanders (as opposed to a fake, lying, ignorant populist in Donald Trump). Yes, Trump stole "populism" from the left, and we Bernie supporters are not at all happy about that.

I strongly suspect if the Dems don't get their act together, find exciting candidates and convincingly state their agenda for Wisconsin and America in the next year, any gains they may make next year as a result of the continuing Trump implosion will be lost to yet another round of massive Republican spending and lying.
