Letter to the editor: Democracy makes progress with votes

To the editor:

Following the disastrous Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, in 2010, U.S. citizens recognized democracy was under threat. These citizens mobilized local efforts nationwide, to take back democracy from "Big Money." Since then 16 state legislatures have passed resolutions calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.

In Wisconsin, these local nonpartisan grassroots efforts started April 5, 2011, with referendums in Madison and Dane County, which passed by margins of 84 percent and 78 percent respectively. Since then, these volunteers have spearheaded 77 local resolutions and referendums, involving 44 percent of Wisconsin citizens, passing by an average of 74 percent.

Locally, on April 5, citizens of Monroe, Brodhead, Town of Clarno and Town of York, along with other communities in Wisconsin, showed more impressive support, voicing an average of over 83 percent support, for the effort to take back democracy.

Locally, support in total votes was published, but I believe that individual municipalities should be proud to know how well they supported democracy:
