To the editor:

On Feb. 5, a unique deejay named Don Jacobson was taken from us.

Don, through his extensive record collection, was that rare radio personality who was given freer reign to detour off the tightly controlled and repetitive oldies format path to play not only the hits of the 1950s and 1960s but also the obscure, lesser hits, novelty/comedy, "B" sides and especially the romantic ballads of that era's 45 RPM vinyl history.

Here's a special thank you to Don's memory for the marvelous panorama of music he shared with his devoted listeners. Oldies formats are normally quite rigid, centering on the demographic target audience that the station strives to achieve for the sole sake of ratings. As with Dan Blum and Bill Korst, who are also allowed to stray from this rigidity, Don guided us on a most adventuresome journey beyond the overexposed; mega hits mentality that the typical format rarely veers away from.

And thank you, "Big Radio"/WEKZ's management for sharing these "time capsule" gentlemen with us.
