Letter to the editor: Boehme seeks support for Monroe school board run

Monroe

To the editor:

This letter is written to solicit your support in my re-election bid to the school board. I believe there are several certainties I have leaned during my first three years on the board. The first: The single most important factor in the academic success of a student is that student's parent, parents or guardian. If a child is to be a successful student, their caregivers must read to and with that student, they must create an atmosphere of love of learning in the home. Secondly: At school, the single most important factor in the academic success of a student is the teacher standing in front of that child. We, as a community, must respect and reward our teaching professionals. We will need the community's support to retain the teaching staff and all of those district support staff that will help create a first class academic experience for all our students. Thirdly: Our public system is under attack under the current administration in Madison. We do not need more voucher or charter schools draining our already dwindling resources for our public school students. We do not need to privatize the education of our children, we need to make what once was the greatest public education system in the world once again the envy of the world.

I believe that as a board, we have made significant progress during my first tenure. A short and very incomplete list of accomplishments follows: We continued to bring the budget under projections, we implemented 1-to-1 technology at the middle school, we created a more rigorous and fair grading system, continued to align our curriculum to each student's skill level, continued to enhance and expand Project Lead the Way, implemented wireless technology at the high school, received a PEP grant of nearly $1 million to help improve the physical well-being of our students, implemented a new reading and writing literacy program, and many more accomplishments.

The student, the school, the family, and the community, if we work as a team, we will get the job done. I ask that you allow me to continue to be part of that team.
