Letter to the editor: Assemblyman must be willing to listen

To the editor:

Recalling some of the legislation that has been passed by Wisconsin's State Assembly during the past few years, I don't believe it wise to continue in that direction. We need our new assemblyman to be willing to listen to the views and needs of his constituents and then to work cooperatively with his fellow legislators of both parties to work out solutions to meet those needs.

We need to have our public schools supported and nourished, rather than take money intended for public education and spend it on private schools. Private schools do not produce better outcomes in students, but when resources are withheld from public schools and used for private school vouchers, it is inevitable that public schools will slowly, but steadily decline. Perhaps that is the goal of the present administration and its supporters. One of the state government's highest priorities should be adequate financial support of our public education system, so that every student can reach his/her highest potential.

We need to restore to our public workers their right to collectively bargain regarding workplace concerns. Respecting and honoring Wisconsin's proud history of worker rights is essential, including all those rights fought for and won by workers' unions, which were stripped from them in Act 10. The Republican candidate for this office has reportedly said he favors Act 10, but not necessarily the way in which it was passed. Act 10 in itself is a big step backward and needs to be remedied.

Voting is one of our most cherished rights, and must be protected. We do not need, nor do we want, voter suppression, which occurs when voter ID requirements are enacted.

Please consider these factors when voting for an Assembly representative.

The candidate representing the Democratic party is widely experienced as a successful educator, agriculturalist, environmentalist, business man, and family man. He has worked to improve farming practices, and to encourage, teach, and mentor farmers and prospective farmers in their work. He is someone who has been innovative in his work, generous in the sharing of his expertise with others, and has a background of working in a nonpartisan way. I plan to vote for this candidate, Dick Cates. I hope you will too.
