To the editor:
On April 5, there's going to be an election concerning a number of issues, starting with the mayor, city council, school board, county board on the local level and on the state level, a Supreme Court Judge. Also, here in Monroe, there will be a referendum promoted by United to Amend to overturn Citizens United to get big money out of politics. The group is supporting a "Yes" vote.
United to Amend is a national group that you can look up on your computer to read more about achieving its goals. Big money is known as "dark money," coming from billionaires and they want to keep their names secret. While the Koch Brothers put huge amounts of money into individual's hands that favor their views, to make billionaires even richer than they are. Charles and David Koch between them have close to $100 billion.
The history of the wealthy running Congress and writing laws has been around for a long time. It is well explained in the book "Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right" by Jane Mayer. It went as far back as at least the 1920s, when Andrew Mellon was Treasury Secretary for Republican Presidents Harding, Coolidge and Hoover. These presidents deregulated the banks and caused the 1929 crash, as well as lowering the federal income tax rate on millionaires.
When wealthy individuals give huge campaign contributions, you are obligated to do what the wealthy people want you to do. I, myself, have never given a politician more than $50. In fact, I'd like to see a large number of people only being able to give a maximum of $100. That way, the politician wouldn't feel obligated to any one individual. He'd feel obligated to serve the majority of the people and the fact that majority rules, when passing any legislation.
In fact, there's a DVD you can get through your library titled "Citizen Koch" where Mike McCabe, who used to run Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, was featured in exactly why we get just the kind of government the millionaires want to give us. These issues have been talked about for years but the Supreme Court has blocked getting big money out of politics and it will continue, unless, we, the people, demand a change, asking for a "Yes" vote on April 5.
