Kim A. Godfrey: Cigarette tax may have negative effect
Placeholder Image
Since Jan. 1, when Gov. Doyle increased the tax on cigarettes by $1 per pack, I have cut my smoking in half. I also am in the process of quitting altogether.

I don't think Gov. Doyle has thought this tax increase totally through. If I do quit smoking, what if hundreds or thousands of people like me also quit? This will add to the already present recession.

Also, tobacco farmers will have a hard time selling their tobacco. They might lose their farms, or have to grow a different crop. What will Gov. Doyle do then?

We already have high property taxes, and he has raised the license plate fees way over the limit.

Gov. Doyle should stick it to the illegal drug users, i.e., marijuana smokers and cocaine users, and especially the ones who get caught with intent to deliver.

Quit putting huge taxes on the poor little man.
