It's not just about wages and benefits

As a social worker for more than 20 years, I have been privileged to work with the poor, elderly, disabled and mentally ill. The magnificence of my clients' bravery and humanity during very difficult - even unimaginable - situations has helped me immeasurably to become a better person myself. I owe them more than I can say. So when I read that "tucked" into Gov. Walker's budget repair bill was a means to curtail programs such as medical care through Medical Assistance, Senior Care, and Family Care without any legislative oversight or process, I became understandably enraged. This is a very big part of this monstrous bill that has been largely ignored. Every Wisconsin citizen should be outraged by this ... and scared. Keep in mind that more than half of all bankruptcies are a direct result of medical bills. Sudden destitution is very possible for all but the very rich ... I am also insulted that Gov. Walker has arbitrarily chosen to effectively disband unions for the public sector (watch out, private sector, you could be next) rather than ask us to come to the table to see how we can help our state. I feel simultaneously ignored and assaulted. This cannot be the way that we interact with each other as adults, let alone in a democracy. It also does not help me feel that I can trust that the governor to ensure that work rules and safety provisions will protect me in my work. Unions are not just about wages and benefits. Please, please contact the governor as well as your state representative today and let them know how you feel.
