Info Tech committee vital step for Monroe

From Michael A. Boyce Ward 3 Alder, Monroe One of my main goals as an alder serving the City of Monroe is effective governance. Effective governance is the active encouragement of participation in the democratic process through the sharing of accurate and timely information. It leads to a culture of relationship building, transparency and open government.

The mayor's recent formation of a permanent Information Technology Committee is a vital step towards building a system of information that all citizens can use to inform themselves on issues. I am grateful to the mayor for creating the committee and appointing me as its chairman.

Until recently, the city did not have a robust computer network. A single network problem was able to take down the entire system. Vital data wasn't always backed up nor was it properly secured. Minor computer problems were frequent and were identified and fixed only after the problem occurred. The former system was highly inefficient and costly to maintain.

The city now has a new computer network with constant system monitoring. The minor problems have mostly gone away, and are typically identified and solved before they cause downtime or a loss in productivity. Computer data is backed up to a secure central server. Our city is no longer on a fixed cost multiple year service contract and the savings are expected to be significant.

This new network is the platform for the future growth of data sharing with the citizens of Monroe. It will allow for video and audio recording of city meetings, which will enable citizens to view meetings that they might not be able to attend in person.

There is a new website coming with an archive center for agendas, minutes, and budget reports. An online payment of taxes, utility bills, and Park & Rec fees is being considered. All city data is being examined and identified as to how it can be shared with citizens of Monroe.

The city is in decent shape financially relative to its peers; however, just like everything else in life there is room for improvement. The new Information Technology Committee is going to work hard to create the technological foundation for the city to promote and foster effective governance. Look forward to good things happening at the city.
