Health fair was entertaining, enlightening

I would like to commend and thank the members; especially the two parish nurses, Lori Vogel and MaryKay Zemlicka, of Hope Evangelical Community Church in Monroe, for planning, organizing and hosting a Health Fair that was both informative and interactive for the physical, emotional and spiritual wellness within the Monroe/Green County community this past Saturday. It truly was a labor of compassion, love and caring concern for all those who attended the fair.

It also was a free opportunity to learn about medical and health care products and services.

The fair offered numerous free health care screenings and it provided an opportunity to meet some of our local physicians who serve our community. Among its booths, was a booth offering insights on Palliative Care and its team approach of a physician who specializes in palliative medicine and features a diverse network of medical expects including a nurse specialist, chaplain, and social worker seeking to improve the dignity and quality of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses.

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of attending this health fair was the opportunity to check your current health and receive education regarding common conditions. Participants at the fair were offered various screenings: Blood pressure, blood sugar, bone density, and total cholesterol, which is designed to show potential buildup of plaque in arteries. Also, to reduce one's stress was a certified massage therapist, who was offering massages to those in attendance.

I was very pleased with the various exhibitors who offered information, testing, and demonstrations. The interactive nature of this health fair continued as it focused on healthy portion sizes and healthy eating habits.

With so many booths, vendors, tests and demonstrations, this health fair has something for everyone in attendance. With all the talk about national Health Care Reform, it was grand and delightful to experience a faith-based health care fair within our community, as we recall the words of our Great Physician: "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick....but go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice...'" (Matthew 9:12,13b)

"Thank you!" to the members of Hope Community Church for freely offering your health care mercy of time and talents for the wounded sisters and brothers in our community.
