Since 1997, the Literacy Council of Green County Ltd. has provided one-on-one literacy tutoring at no cost to motivated adults in greater numbers each year. With the help of our volunteer tutors and instructional programs, more than 80 adults improved their speaking, reading, and writing skills during 2009. A benefit that all participants receive is strengthened self-confidence. While we are very proud of their achievements, we regret that illiteracy continues to plague Green County, threatening economic development, and quality of life.
There will be many new students in 2010. We haven't met them yet, but we are preparing for their arrival. On average, six new students enroll in our program each month, referred to us by friends, neighbors, relatives, church members, or a supportive employer. A student's usual introduction is: "I am here to learn." Our reply is always: "We're here to help." Then the work and magic begin.
The mission of the Literacy Council of Green County, Ltd could not be carried out if not for the funding received from the United Way of Green County. We are most appreciative of the many people who have already contributed this year to the United Way, and encourage those who haven't, to consider a year-end donation to help others. The United Way of Green County helps the Literacy Council and 26 other important non-profits improve the lives of many in Green County.
We are grateful that many adults have been able to advance their literacy skill, thereby improving their current circumstances and future opportunities. When we all contribute, the whole is greater than the parts. When adults become literate, it improves not only their lives, but also the life of the community at large. At this time of year, as you reflect on your blessings, we hope you will think of the lives you will improve with a gift to the United Way of Green County.
