Disgraceful days on the campaign

I never thought I'd live to see the day when a black man could openly be hung in effigy again in our country. But right now, some mutton head in Fairfield, Ohio, has outraged his neighbors by hanging one with the name "Obama", and "Hussein" (which was misspelled, by the way,) and a Star of David on it in his yard. Evidently, the guy who put this up hates Jews, too.

And after Joe McCarthy was so thoroughly disgraced for his "commie" witch hunt decades ago, I never thought I'd live to see the day that one politician, running for the highest office in the land, would falsely accuse another of being a "socialist", either.

I've watched, in horror, YouTube videos of McCain supporters waiting to go into rallies spewing the most disgusting and hideously hateful lies about his opponent. So I guess it shouldn't have surprised me today when I read that Obama supporters' tires were being slashed somewhere now.

I guess I should have expected these things in the first election in the history of the country where the nominee of one of the parties was a black man.

But then again, was I so wrong to hope America had progressed beyond this kind of stuff? If the McCain campaign isn't the most disgusting campaign I've ever witnessed, I simply can't fathom what would be - or how much lower a campaign could possibly stoop.

To me, it isn't enough just to take some small comfort in the fact that nothing quite as despicable as these things is happening around Monroe and the area. To me, these sorts of things shouldn't be happening anywhere in America in the year 2008! We all should be alarmed and deeply ashamed.
