On behalf of the Monroe Police Department DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program and the 2008-2009 graduating fifth-grade DARE students, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Monroe Morning Optimist Club and Monsignor Thomas Campion for their generous donations to the Monroe DARE program.
For the second straight year the Morning Optimist Club and Monsignor Campion have donated funds which enabled the DARE program to purchase DARE bags and T-shirts, respectively, for each DARE graduate. Without their generosity these items could not be purchased.
Since 1996, the Monroe Police Department has been involved with the four elementary schools teaching DARE. DARE is a 10-week program that helps fifth-graders recognize and resist the pressures that may influence them to experiment with tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, inhalants or other drugs.
Each student, upon completing the requirements for graduating, receives a DARE bag and T-shirt. The DARE bags are used for a variety of activities, most notably, as a home for gym clothes as a sixth grader at the Middle School. The Police Department has adopted the slogan "Take Charge of Your Life- Be Drug Free" which is boldly printed on the back of each T-shirt.
This year there are approximately 200 fifth-graders in the four Monroe elementary schools which will receive the DARE message and accompanied by the generosity of the Monroe Morning Optimist Club and Monsignor Campion, this message can continue beyond the classroom.
Thank you again.
