As part of National Cover the Uninsured Week, March 22-28, we are reminding families that health insurance coverage can pave the way for access to needed health care services like vaccinations, prescription drugs and regular check-ups.
While Wisconsin has among the lowest rates of uninsured in the country at 9 percent, there still were 488,000 people without health insurance for all or part of 2007 right here in our back yard.
One way to begin to address the lack of health insurance among Wisconsinites is to ensure that those who are eligible for existing programs know about and get enrolled in them, namely BadgerCare Plus, Wisconsin's public health insurance program.
BadgerCare Plus provides access to affordable, comprehensive health care coverage for virtually all Wisconsin children regardless of income. BadgerCare Plus also offers coverage for many pregnant women, parents and youth aging out of foster care. In addition, it appears likely that coverage will extend to childless adults (adults without dependent minor children) through the BadgerCare Plus Core Plan this July. We applaud this critical coverage expansion, which brings Wisconsin even closer to the ultimate goal of insuring everybody in the state.
The Covering Kids & Families coalition, along with numerous other organizations, has stepped up efforts this year to connect uninsured families with BadgerCare Plus by implementing a variety of outreach strategies as well as providing application assistance. We encourage others to reach out to people in your community and educate them about the benefits of the program.
Our work at Covering Kids & Families will not be done until everyone in Wisconsin has health insurance coverage and access!
