Capitol Update: Ice cream for breakfast in June

What's wrong with ice cream for breakfast? Nothing

June is Dairy Month in Wisconsin and throughout our state, farms and agricultural groups are hosting dairy breakfasts on local farms. On most Saturdays and Sundays in June, you'll find dedicated volunteers cooking pancakes, scrambling eggs, providing tours of farms and scooping ice cream ... for breakfast.

As your state senator, I plan to attend most of the breakfasts in the 17th Senate District and will be volunteering at several of them. There is nothing better than talking about agriculture while enjoying breakfast on a farm. Please consider attending a breakfast near you.

Green County's Breakfast on the Farm was Saturday. Juneau County had a Dairy Month Kick-off dinner instead of breakfast on Saturday.

For a full listing of breakfasts and other dairy events held throughout the state, visit the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board's website: www.dairydaysofsummer.com.

The dairy industry is one of the largest pieces of our economy and a major employer. Wisconsin has more than 10,000 dairy farms, 400 dairy plants, and more than 1 million dairy cows. Dairy production is by far the largest agricultural sector in the state and generates $43.4 billion annually for Wisconsin's economy.

The dairy breakfasts and other events give local farmers and agricultural organizations a chance to share experiences on the farm and new, innovative technologies with citizens who may not otherwise have an opportunity to visit a working farm. Many attendees take away a deeper appreciation for the hard work and effort required for farming, as well as a new impression of the technology and expertise our local farmers employ to deliver the best products to the market. The host farms and volunteers are proud of their operations and the contributions they make to our local and statewide economies.

As your state senator, I am looking forward to visiting most of the local breakfasts to enjoy the delicious meal, friendly conversation and a tour of each farm I visit. I encourage you to take the time to kick-off your summer with Dairy Days this year.
