From Shirley Montgomery Lindsay and Nate Lindsay
Golden, Colo., two locals who come back to Monroe every summer to experience the "Taste of Home."
My husband and I came to Monroe a couple weeks ago planning to attend the Taste of Monroe on the Square and the Balloon Rally this past weekend. Having grown up in Monroe and the surrounding area we look forward to attending Monroe events when we return here each summer. We walked up to the Square on Saturday only to find NOTHING there except the Farme's Market. When I read the paper later I saw that everything had moved to the fairgrounds and there were only non-profit vendors at the fair grounds.
What happened to this great annual event on the Square? You have built this beautiful new historic Main Street Square which I assume means you want to attract out-of-town visitors and then everything gets moved to the fairgrounds. I have talked to numerous people who like us were very disappointed that Taste of Monroe was no longer alive. With all the rain, many of your elderly citizens were unable to tramp through the mud just to get some food and having only non-profit vendors doesn't profit your local businesses. In addition, what happens to the businesses on the Square who can also benefit from having Taste of Monroe on the Square. It seems to me they lost out as well.
Let's bring back the Taste of Monroe next year.
