Blossoms & Barbs: Sept. 17, 2011

A blossom to the staff and volunteers at the Monroe Clinic Hospital. You are doing a great job directing and redirecting all of us confused patients. Thank you for making a difficult situation much easier. I for one would be lost without all the flag-holders showing me which way to go. The valet parking is a huge bonus for someone like me who needs that extra assistance right now. A big thank you from me. - Nan

A big double-edged barb to the New Glarus Hotel for hogging the sidewalk in front of the hotel for their tables and chairs, forcing pedestrians to have to walk over the tree grates and under the low hanging tree branches. For people in wheelchairs or young parents with strollers, your cheesy taking of the public walkway for your business profits makes it almost impossible for them to use the sidewalk. Your action is shameful but not surprising. - Anonymous

A big blossom to the Monticello girls for going undefeated and winning the championship in the Monroe Park and Rec Junior and Senior Softball Leagues. Also hats off for going undefeated and winning the championship in the SWAGS league. Having coaches who know the game well makes a big difference so a big blossom to Duane Garrison and Dave Geitzel. Great season! - Anonymous

A barb to Sugar River Bank as well. It is no longer a community bank. It is getting just as bad as the big city banks. I really miss the old Bank Of Juda, the bank that really cared for its customers. - Anonymous

This is a barb to The Monroe Times. I would have to say that I'm disappointed in the Times' coverage of Monroe's 9/11 ceremony. On the front page of the paper, we could read an article from Washington and an article from Madison. What I was really interested in was an article about Monroe. Monroe's 9/11 ceremony was something to talk about. Many of our area responders attended and I saw many of them brought to tears as well as other members of the public who attended. I thought the ceremony was so well put together that the Times could at least cover it. And look at the large piece of the World Trade Center we now hold as a monument in our town. The Times should be putting a story out about the significance of this monument. Those that we lost on 9/11 deserve it, and those that put their lives on the line every day deserve a bigger local story than the short captions under the photos. - Anonymous

A very special and endless blossom to the Juda First Response, Brodhead Area EMS crew and Deputy Randy Teutschmann of the Green County Sheriff's Department for their response to assist our dad, Henry Henning, on Tuesday, Sept. 13. This was a very trying and stressful time, which was made so much easier due to the efficient response and professionalism of our emergency personnel. Never forget these people, as there will come a day when you will need them. - Fred Norder/The Henning Family

A huge blossom to the people who organized, decorated, and made root beer floats for the more than 100 people who attended the presentation of the Friends in Faith Ministry of the United Methodist Church given by the Green County Historical Society on Wednesday, Sept. 14. It was well organized and welcoming to the public.

Another huge blossom to the people who took time from their day to attend the "Remembering the Rural Schools of Green County." It was great to see such a great turnout. GCHS appreciates the generous donations. - Green County Historical Society

A barb to the GOP debate. Ronald Reagan is no longer with us. GOP debate stressed his legacy. We have to remember Ronald Reagan raised the debt ceiling seven times during his presidency. He fired union workers and doubled the deficit, and his "trickle down economics" (Reagan Economics), never trickled. Also, he deregulated many things, such as banking, oil, airlines and Wall Street. Now the Republicans are blaming the Obama administration for no jobs. They want credit for bringing our troops home and claim the ability to balance the budget and erase the national debt without raising taxes while deigning compassion for the middle class. The debate was nothing more than an attempt to pat Reagan on the back while kicking President Obama in the pants. Are we going to fall for their lies and faulty reasoning? I hope not. - Anonymous

I have a barb for people not to respond to an ad that was posted all over the United States about giving away a Honda 1988 GL1500 motorbike and other bikes. It is a scam quite a few have responded to and the people that are giving it away keep giving sad stories. Other people have sent quite a bit of money to these people and have not yet received the bikes. I would just like to warn other people so this doesn't happen to anyone else. It has been reported to authorities and nothing has been done yet. - Anonymous

A giant red white and blue blossom to the Monroe Fire Department and the area churches who organized the very moving 9/11 remembrance. It is not often a crotchety guy like me has tears running down his checks in public. What a great thing to have all those emergency services people from all the local agencies participate. Great! Great! Great! - Anonymous
